Description: John Cousturier, (Rouen). 1635. SECOND EDITION. Two volumes. 4to. (9.1 x 6.9 inches). -- Volume 1: (18), 908pp, (1 -errata leaf), Volume 2: 1018pp, 34. --- Engraved head and tail pieces and initial letters. Text within ruled lines. Without the extra engraved title pages, only found in some copies according to Herbert. The last leaf in volume one, (publishers note after the main text and referring to the tables and corrections listed in volume two) is torn in half but it is only the blank bottom half of the page that is missing and all of the text is present. The pagination is erratic in some parts but the main text in both volumes is complete although it is lacking the last leaf in volume 2 (containing an extract from the Royal license granted to Jean Le Cousturier of Rouen to print these Bibles in English, dated 3 August 1634). A very good example with a small amount of loss to the margin of the title page of volume one, a dark stain to the very bottom margin of about 50 leaves in volume one, and some staining to the last couple of dozen leaves of volume two but overall clean and crisp throughout. A few pages with a small amount of worming. Contemporary full brown calf bindings with some expert repairs to the hinges and spines. Neat early previous owner name to the first and last pages. Uncommon in any condition, to find one that is mostly clean and tidy throughout and in early leather bindings is harder still. ---- A very good copy of the second edition of the Roman Catholic version of the Old Testament, first published in 1609 and 1610 at Douai. The last edition of the Douay-Rheims bible to be published for 115 years, until the Richard Challoner revised edition of 1750. Herbert, 499. STC 2321.
