Title: THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER. - THE NEW TESTAMENT, and WHOLE BOOK OF PSALMS. And administration of the Sacraments and other rites and ceremonies of the Church. According to the use of The Church of England: Together with the Psalter or Psalms of David, pointed as they are to be sung or said in Churches. --- The New testament of our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ, Newly translated out of the original Greek. --- The whole book of psalms: Collected into the English metre, by Thomas Sternhold, John Hopkins, and Others.
Description: Printed by the University Printers. Oxford. -- Charles Bill and the Executrix of Thomas Newcomb, deceas'd. London. -- The Company of Stationers. London. 1706 - 1703 - 1706.. ATTRACTIVE QUEEN ANNE COTTAGE ROOF BINDING. Three works bound in one volume, the text all collated and complete. 8vo. (7.9 x 4.9 inches). Text printed in black with red ruled borders. First work is finely illustrated with 55 full page copper engravings, all very strong impressions, within red ruled borders. The images are mostly biblical but some are more political and including one of the Gunpowder plot and another showing the martyrdom of King Charles I. The numbering is incorrect on a couple of the plates (no plate 34 but two numbered 41) but they are all present and correct. Two of the plates, bound before the text, including a portrait of Queen Anne, have been neatly hand coloured. --- The second work has 98 full page plates, again strong impressions and within red ruled borders. There is no list of plates and both Copac the ESTC do not list this edition with illustrations. Bound in attractive contemporary full black morocco Cottage roof binding. The spine has five raised bands. Compartments ruled and decorated in gilt. Boards with elaborate decorative gilt panels and floral decoration. Inner boards with marbled endpapers and gilt decorated borders. The front free endpaper has been replaced at some stage with not quite matching marbled paper, but the effect is still appealing. All edges gilt. Previous owners colour printed bookplate to the front paste down endpaper and neat 3 line inscription, dated 1847 on front blank endpaper, but overall a very clean copy throughout. A small chip to the bottom of the spine but overall a very good and attractive copy.
