Title: MEDICAL WOMEN. A Thesis and A History. -- 1. Medicine as a profession for Women. II. The medical education of Women. 1. The battle in Edinburgh. II. The victory won.
Description: Oliphant, Anderson & Ferrier, Edinburgh. Hamilton Adams, London. 1886. SECOND EDITION. 8vo. (7.8 x 5.4 inches). Inscribed by the Author on the half title - 'Emily Polito / July 20. 1902. / From the Author'. This edition is extensively revised and updated by the author from the 1872 first edition, with a 100pp appendix and notes section which includes a summary of the case of the Edinburgh seven against Edinburgh University. As Jex-Blake writes in the preface 'It was...... manifestly impossible to issue this(edition) without bringing the history of events down to the present time... '. Some foxing to the fore edge but overall a clean copy in the original publishers red cloth binding with gilt lettering to the front board and spine. Some fading to the spine but overall a very good copy. An uncommon book, especially so with the Author's inscription. --- Sophia Jex-Blake (1840-1812), was a hugely important Physician and Women's rights advocate. Scotland's first practising female doctor, she was instrumental in the founding of both the London and Edinburgh Schools of Medicine for Women.
