Title: Observations on the influence of Soil and Climate upon Wool; from which is deduced, a Certain and Easy Method of improving the quality of English Clothing Wools, and preserving the Health of Sheep; with Hints for the Management of Sheep after shearing...
Description: Philadelphia: Published by Kimber and Conrad, William Fry, Printer, 1814. First American edition, 12mo, text slightly browned, 120pp., disbound. This is not Bakewell the sheep-breeder, but the geologist. Bakewell was probably one of the Quakers and wool-staplers of that name in Nottingham. As a schoolboy he amused himself with construction of telescopes, and being amongst wools looked at them under a microscope. He afterwards speculated as to the effects of soil and food upon them and published this work, while living in Wakefield. After writing this book he confined himself to mineralogy and geology.
