William Aiton (1760-1847) of Strathaven was Sheriff Substitute for the Middle Ward in Lanarkshire, and was widely known as an authority "on all matters bearing on Scottish husbandry". He had the perception to observe that one of the major problems of the Scottish farmer was the cultivation of moss earth.
