Title: Kaichuu Nikki
Description: 1904. 13x8cm, ca. 240 pp.. Lacking covers. Good. ¶ This is a commercially produced pocket diary, lacking its original covers, evidently produced by the Japanese military and issued to soldiers under training. The title on the first inside page of the Japanese book is " Kaichuu Nikki" ("Pocket Journal"), apparently meant to be kept during military training, and the printing information at the back says that this book was printed in October of Meiji 37 (1904). Approximately 120 leaves, half of consist of handwritten journal entries, the remainder being pages printed with text concerning regulations and other military topics. The handwritten entrties fill every available blank space in a fairly clear hand, using many old-fashioned kanji. Some additional slips of paper bearing writing are tipped-in. Nearly every entry starts "Running, 5 a.m.
