["As a reaction to the theories of the Latin, Greek and North Italic origin of the runes, Fritz Askeberg (1944) posited an hypothesis which on the one hand rejected the major theories but on the other hand proved to be another variant of the Latin theory. His hypothesis states that the runes were developed by the Goths in the 2nd Century after Christ when they lived on the Vistula and that the Goths modeled the runes after the Latin alphabet. He believed that the methodology oy his predecessors was at fault in that they all sought a one-to-one correspondence between the runes and the mother alphabet" - Richard Lee Morris "Runic and Mediterranean Epigraphy" (1988), p. 42].
