Royal 8vo. *6 + A6 + A6 + 267pp. + [**8] + 357pp. Dec. initial letters and headpieces including some historiated. [Gg6] is a blank. Signature B2 repaired, prelims. upto signature B2 with sm. spilt to fore-edge, ‘Mr Hugh Jones His Booke 1680’ together with pen markings to title page with sl. loss to corners, blank to rear heavily annotated, occasional underlining, some browning and occasional stains, marbled e.ps., old mottled calf boards, sympathetically rebacked in C20th calf with gilt compartments and gilt lettered label to spine. ¶ Armorial bookplate ‘Tempvs Edax Rervm’ to verso of title page, ex-libris Bisset family of Lessendrum House, Huntly, Aberdeen and most probably to James Bisset died 1748. ESTC S106807. ‘A translation of: Alemán, Mateo. Aventuras y vida de Guzmán de Alfarache, which was originally published in two parts as Primera [Segunda] Parte de Guzman de Alfarache. Translator’s dedication signed: Don Diego Puede--Ser, i.e. James Mabbe. In Mabbe’s Second part passages occur which are only to be found in Barezzo Barezzi’s Italian translation--cf. James Fitzmaurice-Kelly’s introduction to The rogue, 1924 (The Tudor translations, 2nd series). The second part has separate dated title page and pagination; register is continuous. STC (2nd ed.), 290. Madan, I, p. 148.’ The Mabbe translation first published in 1622.
