Description: Longmans, Green and Co., 1880. 1st Ed. Thick 8vo. 448pp. Frontis., title page vignette, upwards of 100 ills. chiefly from drawings by the Hon. A.Y. Bingham including 8 plates, 2 folding maps. Light age toning and sporadic foxing, hinges cracked, original pictorial cloth ills. in red and gilt from a design by Doré, corners frayed, spine sl. chipped, joints rubbed with sm. hole to upper joint. ¶ Toy 955 ‘Part I is an account of a voyage in the Western Mediterranean in 1874. Part II tells of a voyage in 1878 to Cypress, the Aegean, and Constantinople. Both voyages were made to Sunbeam.’ Inscribed to half title ‘To Dr Dobell with best wishes from the Author Annie Brassey August 1880.’ With the bookplate of Dr Horace Dobell, and a short note to the head of half title ‘Mrs Brassey, first wife of Lord Brassey was a patient of mine HD’. Similarly to the rear there is a press cutting dated June 21, 1916 detailing Lord Brassey surrendering the ‘Sunbeam’ for the war effort, with a note from Dobell. Horace Benge Dobell (1828–1917) English doctor and medical writer, consulting doctor to the Royal Infirmary/Hospital for Diseases of the Chest. Anna Brassey, Baroness Brassey (1839–1887) English traveller and writer. As a child, she faced serious health problems, in ‘The Last Voyage’, her husband recalled that Allnutt suffered from an inherited weakness of the chest, apparently a form of chronic bronchitis, although ultimately she died from Malaria whilst on a journey to India and Australia, undertaken in November 1886 to improve her health.
