His forthright criticisms of the East India Company and the Bengal government led to his expulsion from India and the suppression of the paper by the acting governor-general, John Adam, in April 1823 ... long afterwards that the East India Company conceded the injustice of the suppression by granting him a pension of £200 a year. Having returned to London, Buckingham published accounts of the lands which he visited on his way to and from India, ... [and devoted] considerable energy to the establishment of several journals, including the monthly Oriental Herald and Colonial Review (1824–9), which continued his campaign against the East India Company and promoted colonial self-government ...’ ODNB.
