Title: THE SEXAGENARIAN; Or, the Recollections of a Literary Life.
Description: London: Printed for F.C. & J. Rivington , 1818. 2nd Ed. 2 vols. viii + 435pp. [iii] + t.p. + 388pp. New e.ps., sporadic light browning and spotting, half contemporary morocco with marbled boards, corners scuffed and sl. worn, rebacked in later leather, raised bands and gilt title to browned spines. ¶ William Beloe (1756-1817) theological and miscellaneous writer who also wrote 'Anecdotes of Literature.' The above, Beloe's final work, was first published in 1817 at the time of his death, apparently under the editorship of Thomas Rennell. It caused a furore. Dr. Butler, head master of Shrewsbury School, criticised it severely in the Monthly Review, and Parr, in the catalogue of his library, wrote he was compelled to record the name of Beloe as an ingrate and a slanderer. Via Robert Southey's library, a key was published in 1860 to some of those alluded to indirectly in the book!
