Author: Audsley, W & G. Title: COTTAGE LODGE AND VILLA ARCHITECTURE.
Description: William Mackenzie, N.d. c.[1868]. 1st Ed. 4to. 152 plates, folding chart (torn at hinge), rubric t.p. Some browning, hinges cracked, marbled e.ps., front f.e.p. detached, contemporary gilt fillet edged tree calf boards, some wear, boards sl. warped, gilt ruling and motifs with gilt lettered label to spine. ¶ Following carefully the recommendations of Ruskin and the examples of Butterfield, the Audsleys write in the preface, 'It is obvious that if we build our houses of one colour of stone, a painfully monotonous effect is certain to be the result'. Hence their designs, mostly in Gothic or Old English styles, include much polychromatic decoration using different coloured bricks and some stonework.
