Sir Joseph Archer Crowe [ 1825 - 1896 ] & Giovanni Battista Cavalcaselle [ 1819 - 1897 ] art historians who's works on the hisotry of art stand at the beginning of disciplined modern art history writing in English. This book was the first major monograph on Titian. Sir Lionel Henry Cust [ 1859 - 1929 ] British art historian, and director of the National Portrait Gallery from 1895 to 1909.
