Description: Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent & Co, Stationers Hall Court, 1890, stereotyped edition. Half calf over marbled boards, VG. [tp]+377pp, pages tanned to the margins, leather rubbed with some splitting to the head of the spine, upper hinge a little tender but holding, ex libris Francis Fitzherbert with his bookplate. Hardback , no dustjacket. ¶ A murder mystery of the sensational kind which was the stock in trade of the author. The book was originally published as a triple decker the year before & then as a yellowback in 1890 ( this edition, but here rebound ). Braddon wrote the story between 12 October 1887 & March 28th 1889. Serial rights were sold to Sir William Leng of Sheffield for a sum in excess of £1,000 for use in his newspapers.
