Paperback , no dustjacket. ¶ The Kojiki is the oldest surviving chronicle of Japan, dating from the early 8th century. Written by O-no Yasumaro for the Empress Gemmei, it is a collection of myths concerning the origin of the four home islands of Japan. Basil Hall Chamberlain [ 1850 - 1935 ] was professor of Japanese at Tokyo Imperial University & was one of the leading British Japanologists of the late 19th C. He was the first to translate the Kojiki into English [1882].
