The author, William Coulson [ 1801 - 1877 ] was a leading Victorian surgeon with a specialism in the disease of the Bladder. In 1851 he performed the first operation at St Mary's Hospital, Paddington, just after the hospital opened he being the senior surgeon there. His books on surgery were extremely popular in his day.
