Description: printed only for Edward Wicksteed in Warwick Court, Warwick Lane, Newgate Street, London, 1753, 11th edition. Full contemporary calf, F. tp+x+546+[16]pp, engraved frontis, title engraved with imprimatur in letterpress on the verso, the 'Private Devotions' section has its own title page, but the register & pagination are continuous, a bright & attractive copy. Armorial Bookplate of the Earls of Macclesfield [ South Library ] on the pastedown dated 1860, three blindstamped Macclesfield library stamps to the frontis, title & first leaf, leather a trifle rubbed & bumped with a circular dark mark to the lower board, but overall a fine copy. Hardback with dustjacket. ¶ A devotional work, written anonymously like the earlier work alluded to in the title, 'The Duty of Man'. That work was attributed to Richard Allestree [ 1619 - 1681 ], the author of this new devotional is unknown, although John Entick [ 1703 - 1773 ] is likely to have had a hand in the authorship.
