[xxxii]+276pp, 155+cxvii+[iv]pp, leather very rubbed & worn, upper board to the second volume detached, upper board to the first near detached, internally clean & in near fine condition. The 'Preuves' is the 117 page section in the second volume. Hardback , no dustjacket. ¶ Published anonymously the work is an attempt to show the unbroken line of succession which could be traced from the Apostles down through the Bishops of the English [ Anglican ] Church. Pierre François le Courayer [ 1681 - 1776 ] Canon and librarian of the Abbey of St Genevieve in Paris. Material for this book was obtained partly through a correspondence with William Wake, Archbishop of Canterbury, which touched upon the subject of Episcopal succession in England. The book was not well received & Le Courayer found himself liable for prosecution on the Catholic Continent - he fled to England & upon his death many years later was buried in the cloisters at Westminster Abbey.
