Title: On Englishing the Bible.
Description: London, Burns Oates, 1949. Original green cloth, ix[i]+101 pp. No dust-wrapper, title rather rubbed from spine. Ex university library, with shelf number and neat stamps to end-papers. Otherwise a clean, tight copy. The author, born into a strongly evangelical family, became a Catholic in 1917 and in 1922 became a priest. As well as being a theologian, he wrote detective stories. He was a regular broadcaster for the BBC and is particularly remembered for a hoax broadcast of rioting which caused widespread fear and confusion. More conventionally he distinguished himself by retranslating of the Latin Vulgate Bible into English, using Hebrew and Greek sources.
