The series provided useful publicity for the descriptive phonetic research at the department. Both common and less well-charted languages were chosen for a balanced list. (See Collins & Mees 'The Real Inspector Higgins: The Life and Career of Daniel Jones', 1999). Jones' work with Camilli and others provided the model for the updated IPA Principles published in 1949.
