Description: . Small 4to. Pp. (ii), 127, (1), 128-503, 46, (2). With parallell text in Chinese and Portugese. Native contemporary half calf, spine rubbed with some loss of calf, expertly restored. Old ownership stamps on title. Some minor flaws; title page has one small loss at inner margin and about fifty pages affected at outer upper right corner by worming but no loss of text. Last two leaves dusty and chipped at edges of which one strengthened at lower margin (no loss). First edition. Father Gonçalves produced several books for Portugese students. "Arte China" provides a thorough and very practical introduction to many aspects of the Chinese language. The appendix is a comparative phonetic study of the pronunciation of Mandarin and Cantonese Chinese. The work was printed at the Collegio de San Jose at Macao by Portugese priests on a press which had been lent to them in 1827 after the "Gazetta de Macao" had closed down.
