Text in romanized Malagasy throughout. Bound in original blindstamped cloth (8 vols), contemporary calf, half calf and cloth, of which some are rubbed. The major part of the Malagasy literary heritage was oral and because of the colonialism the emergence of Malagasy literature had been inhibited. In 1818 the London Missionary Society initiated their business on the island and the first printing office was started in 1827. Literary Malagasy evolved in the second half of the 19th century.
