Description: . 4to. Pp. (xii) including first blank leaf, 378, (2). With engraved frontispiece, one large folding map (small tear) and six uncoloured aquatint plates. Contemporary calf, gilt fillets on covers, edges rubbed, rebacked. Beautiful marbled end papers and edges. Some very light offsetting from plates and partly upper margin with some light staining. First English edition published in the same year as the first French. Mollien, a French diplomat, was one of the earliest European explorers of the West African interior. He came to Senegal in 1817 and the following year he travelled across Senegal and Gambia and discovered the sources of the Senegal and Gambia rivers. Interesting account of the different tribes he met along the route. Includes some pages with vocabularies of Joloff and Poula languages. Abbey, Travel, 273. Gay 2910.
