Description: . 4to. Pp. (vi), 3-164. With engraved frontispiece portrait, engraved extra title, one engraved map, and 78 steel-engraved plates protected by tissue guards. Two plates starting to loosen. Occasionally some light staining. Contemporary half morocco on silk covered boards, spine lettered in gilt, rubbed and covers faded, a.e.g. First edition. Julia Pardoe, a British author, travelled together with her father to Constantinople in 1835. Her comprehensive work about the city and its people and customs became very popular at the time, not least dependant on the beautiful illustrations after William Henry Bartlett. The plates depict wonderful views, the mausoleum and the mosque of Suleiman the Magnificent, Hamman scenes, the Armory Bazzar, scenes from Scutari (Üsküdar) including the cemetery and fountain, etc. Several editions appeared.
