Publisher's blue full calico on boards, blindstamped decorated frames, gilt-stamped title in Chinese characters on upper cover. A French edition of the revised version of the "Sacred Edict" (Sheng-yü kuang-hsün), a popular text book for the improvement of manners in China. It contains 16 moral maxims which can be regarded as the basic laws of China during the Ch'ing dynasty. Originally written by the Kang-hsi emperor and later on extended by his successor the Yung-cheng emperor. Cordier BS 1427.
