Later cloth, worn and stained, binding shaken.First edition of the first Sanskrit grammar to be published in Europe. It is based on the manuscript grammar of the Jesuit Ernestus Hanxleden. Includes an alphabetical table listing: Granthamicum (used throughout the work), Indostanum and Nagaricum and a woodcut Telugu alphabet (Talinganicum). De Sacy 2929. Windich 20-21. In our copy quiz Z (pp. 177-184) have been recomposed at another press. Another copy with the same collation, including a later printed quiz Z, is listed by Smitskamp in their catalogue 614 (1997). The author, known by several names, was an Austrian Carmelite missionary and Orientalist who in 1774 came to Malabar in India as a missionary. He returned to Rome in 1789 and became private secretary to Cardinal Stefano Borgia, Secretary to the Propaganda Fide. He is known for being one of the first scholars to remark on the relationship between Indian and European languages.
