Title: Abrégé historique des principaux traits de la vie de Confucius, célèbre philosophe chinois ... d'après des dessins originaux de la Chine envoyés à Paris par M. Amiot, missionnaire à Pékin ... Paris, chez l'auteur, 1788.
Description: . 4to. Lvs. 49. Including engraved title, 24 engraved plates and 24 engraved text leaves. Contemporary half calf on marbled boards, flat spine blind and gilt-stamped, rubbed. Bookplate (Piper, Sövdeborg). The beautiful engravings illustrate the life and deeds of Confucius engraved by Helman (1743-1806). They are copied from a set of Chinese miniatures which were sent by the Jesuit missionary Amiot in Peking to Bertin, who was Louis xiv's minister and the one in charge of France's relation with China. This is an example of how the "chinoiseries" was spreading within Europe in the late 18th century. Some light staining throughout but overall a very good copy. Cohen 262. Cordier BS 667. Lipperheide Le16. Lust 729.
