Binding worn and some marginal wormholes to the first and third volumes. Some old annotations. Bookplates. Lady Wortley Montagu was the first lady to travel abroad for mere curiosity's sake. When her husband was appointed British ambassador to the Porte in 1716, she decided to join him. They settled in a hilltop palace at Pera, which became their home for 18 months. Lady Mary's letters first published after her death (1763) became enormously popular and reissued many times.
