Title: The English Governess at the Siamese Court: Being Recollections of Six Years in the Royal Palace at Bangkok. Philadelphia, Porter & Coates, (1870).
Description: . Pp. x, 321. With eight wood engraved plates made from photographs given to the author by the King of Siam. Frontispiece with some foxing, a few small stains at upper margin of four leaves, otherwise a clean and fresh copy. Publisher's cloth, printed in gilt and black, extremities very lightly rubbed, small stain to back cover. Old inscription on front endpaper. A well-known account by an English governess about her life with the Royal family in Bangkok. King Mongkut of Siam (or Rama IV), a well-educated and fashionable man, wanted to give his children a European education. Anna Leonowens spent six years at the court where she taught 67 Royal children as well as some wives and servants. The accuracy of her work has been questioned but apart from that it's a charming story which Margaret Landon used for her novel "Anna and the King of Siam" (1944). It was followed by a musical and a film, both titled "The King and I". Cordier BI 738. Robinson p.139. (first edition London 1870).
