Description: . Oblong folio. Size: 38.5 x 28.5 cm. Pp. (xii) comprising dedication, title, preface, table of contents followed by extra title with portrait of the emperor Duy-Tán. With 75 heliogravure plates, several with multiple images. Each plate interleaved with a leaf of descriptive tissue. Parallel text in French, English and German. Publisher's calf binding, with faux (or genuine?) snakeskin on covers , lettered in gilt, silk endpapers. The plates themselves are subtitled in the three languages and in Chinese. A wonderful copy of this interesting album devoted to Annam and Tonkin) (Vietnam). The plates with numerous photographs depict views, people, ceremonies, pagodas, and official buildings. The illustrations from Hué include several of the tombs of kings, and others of pagodas, musicians, palace eunuchs, etc. Many photos are taken in Hanoi and show residential quarters, both of natives and foreigners, different types of Delta women, Mandarin families, river sampans as well as several important sites. From the region around Hanoi there are photos from Ha Long Bay, Haiphong, Nam Dinh, Bâc Ninh Province and Tuyên Quang. At the end about fifteen plates are devoted to Cao Bàng province, the mountainous region in the north-eastern part of the country and home to many ethnic hill tribes. Includes many images of these hill tribes. Pierre Dieulefils was a French photographer who ran a studio in Hanoi 1885-1925.
