"Among the many intriguing episodes of the early Protestant missionary experience in China, none attracted as much attention or generated as much controversy as the 'Term Question'. Beginning as a simple difference of opinion over the most appropriate Chinese expressions to use for the English words 'God' and 'spirit' in translation of the Bible, the issue eventually split the missionary community into contending factions and brought a dramatic end to the united theological front that had hitherto shaped Protestant efforts to win the final victory for Christianity in China".
