Description: . Large 8vo. (18.3 x 24.6 cm) Pp. 76, double folded in the Japanese fashion. With sixteen full page colour woodcuts and three single sheet crêpe paper woodcut prints tipped in. Further illustrations throughout the text. With English text. Original decorated stiff paper wrappers, string bound, very light wear to extremities. Housed in the original cardboard box. First edition, reprinted in 1911. Julia Carrothers came to Japan as a Presbyterian missionary in 1869 together with her husband. She had a long-standing connection with Japan and Hasegawa after her return to San Diego in 1877. When she came back to Japan in 1903 she provided Hasegawa with the manuscript for this book. A lovely copy of a charming and informative work about Japan and its culture based on the months of the calendar year. The beautiful illustrations are very delicate.
