Description: . Small 4to. Pp. (iv) with title and list of plates. With fifty hand-coloured engraved plates, each accompanied with descriptive text. Interleaved with blank leaves. Half vellum on marbled boards, flat spine with green title label, lightly rubbed. Second edition of this title. The illustrations depict varies professions including entertainers, as well as costumes of royalty and commoner. Contains images of tradesmen, musicians, street scenes, soldiers, etc. The plates are printed with "published for J. Murray ... 1814" but the paper is watermarked 1825-27. Alexander published already in 1805 (and 1815) another work titled "The Costume of China" but contains different plates than found here. William Alexander, British artist, accompanied as draughtsman on Lord Macartney's official embassy to Bejing 1792-4. A handsome copy with clean and beautiful plates (minor insignificant staining to a few plates). Colas 75. Cordier 1859. Lipperheide 1527.
