Description: . 12mo. Pp. xii, 240; 225; 200, (4). With three fronts. Contemporary marbled boards, flat calf spines decorated in gilt and with title labels. Small repair to volume three's spine. First edition of a collection of Chinese novels translated into French. Abel-Remusat was a medical student who became enchanted by China and taught himself the fundaments of Chinese by using Fourmont's work, and became the protégé of Silvestre de Sacy. In 1814 he was appointed the first professor of Chinese in Europe, at the College de France, which he held until his death. Cordier BS 1761.
