First edition, limited to 500 copies (of which 100 were signed).Mannerheim, Finnish-born officer in the Russian army, covered approximately 14,000 km on horseback during his two-year journey along the Silk Road. He travelled from Russian Turkestan, through Chinese Turkestan and Western China via Gansu and Shaanxi to Peking. The initial mission of the expedition was to study conditions in northern China and "other military objectives" but was later expanded to also collect archaeological and ethnological material. The first part of this work contains Mannerheim's diary and the second contains scientific descriptions of the collections of many famous scientists.
