Contemporary half calf, spine with four raised bands, richly gilt and title lettered in gilt, u.e.g., hinges cracking. First edition. Séraphin Couvreur (1835-1919), French sinologist and Jesuit, came to China in 1870. He spent the greater part of his life at the Jesuit residence at Sien-hsien where he was professor at the Seminary. He complied several Chinese dictionaries and translated many of the Chinese classical works. Couvreur was the creator of the EFEO Chinese transcription method which was used in most of the French speaking world to transliterate Chinese until the middle of 20th century when it was replaced by Hanyu Pinyin. Cordier BS 1617.
