Half crimson morocco over marbled boards, gilt spine with raised bands, patterned endleaves, silk place-marker. Mild wear at extremities. Scattered, mostly marginal foxing (some leaves more heavily toned), else a very good, uncut copy, with clean plates (tissue guards present). ¶ First Edition of this illustrated collection containing short biographies of 56 notable French women, many of them actresses, singers, and dancers. Some of the lithographic portrait plates are by A. Constant, E. Desmaisons, and H. Robillard after designs by A. de Chatillon. A companion volume appeared the same year under the title Les belles femmes de Paris et de la province, par Messieurs de Balzac [etc...]. A second series appeared the following year, accompanied by a letter volume. Digital images available upon request.
