Guache painting on rolled palm marrow, mounted on card, measuring 17.5 by 28 cm. A few fine cracks, else a fine, bright illustration. Professionally presented in hinged archival mat with mylar guard, suitable for framing. ¶ Mid 19th-century Chinese guache painting illustrating in minute detail a tea processing plant, its various processes, a European trader (and his ship in the background) engaged in negotiations with a Chinese merchant calculating at his abacus - all in a single scene. Painted on a delicate sheet of rolled palm marrow - similar in consistency to an extremely thin wafer of dense styrofoam - works such as these were intended as curios for sale to European travelers.
