Antwerp: de Jode, 1585. 8 engraved plates, measuring apprx. 30.5 by 22 cm, tipped onto sturdy 18th-cent. paper by folding over two edges of each plate, leaving 1-2 cm margins beyond the platemark. Fine set. Digital images available upon request. ¶ Complete series of eight, late 16th-century engraved plates from De Jode's Thesaurus, depicting scenes of the sack of Jerusalem, the Jewish war against Antiochus Epiphanes and the rededication of the Temple. Latin quotations from Books 1 and 2 Maccabees appear as captions below each illustration. The images are notable for their bold sense of movement and unabashed brutality, suggestive of modern comic book illustration styles.
