Description: John Murray, 1825. Hardcover. iv+206p. Original second edition bound in half leather with raised bands and title label. Note Vol.II of 2 only, A long gift inscription in probably an ageing hand to Captain Edward Gordon, R.N, - give with reference to the last poem Korner's song of the Sword quoting The garlands wait thy brow. Signed by John Wells..... Captain Edward Gordon was the Captain of Acorn which was lost with all officers and men at sea in bad weather in the month of April 1828. John Wells Admiral Sir John Wells GCB (1763 - 19 November 1841) was a Royal Navy officer of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. After joining the Royal Navy Wells was promoted to lieutenant in 1779 and commander in 1782. He was then given his first command, the sloop HMS Raven. He served in her on the Leeward Islands Station until he was captured by two French frigates in 1783. He was then promoted to post captain and given command of the frigate HMS Boreas upon his release later in the year. He left Boreas in 1784 and did not receive another command until 1797 when he commissioned the ship of the line HMS Lancaster. (wiki). No proof that the script refers to Gordon r Wells but appears very likely. The book has a strong tight binding, is clean with plain ochre endpapers The boards are rubbed as are the edges and corners but spine clean and still VG. There is an old damp mark toward the top of the first few and several last pages. Not intrusive. See scans and email for more. . Very Good
