Unlike their Jesuit predecessors, the Columban missionaries were not trained in languages or culture and tended to see Buddhism and other Chinese religions as idolatry and paganism. Like other missionary publications of the period, The Far East highlighted this as well as the exotic aspects of China in the interests of securing readers and donations back home. This volume covers the period of the Japanese invasion and chronicles a number of murders of priests and imprisonments. Concurrently major floods caused a refugee problem. Well illustrated with many pictures of Young missionaries and lists of donors. In near VG condition - no marks or signatures and book tight; front board has some bubbling under the cloth.
