Title: Parish of Girthon - Kirkcudbrightshire - Poor Law Letter Book 1870-1877 in Photocopy.
Description: , . Hardcover. The Parish of Girthon in Kirkcudbrightshire SW Scotland centres around the Town of Gatehouse of Fleet. This lot consists of unbound direct photocopies taken from the copy letter book of the Inspector of the Poor John Hunter from 1870 until 1877. This letter book was in private hands in 1999 when I borrowed it and photocopied it. Concurrently I photocopied the Poor Law Register of Entries of Girthon Parish (also listed for sale) and drew up an index from information within the Register, including names, sex, place and date of birth, date of death, enrtry date, residence, occupation and disability. 891 individuals are recorded. A copy of this index is included with the letter book which will help as a source of cross reference for this letter book. There are 500 pages of letters preceeded by a handwritten index of names. Letters relate to enquiries and instructions concerning persons on the Poor Roll. Much information about individuals and their families someties revealed. Typical letter: To Mr James Dunbar, 21 Steven Street, Glasgow Dunbar - Dr.Sir, I write to inform you that the parochial board of Girthon consider that you are in a position to wholly support your father . I was instructed to write and see from your minister the salary you receive as church officer &ec., which I will have to do, tho at the same I consider you will give me a truthful account yourself of all your sources of income without giving the going the length of your employers. I have written to Peter your brother on the matter of himeself doing his share in supporting your father but with what success I cannot say - please send me word what is your position in regard to . I am writing you as I am in duty bound, Yours truly, Jno Hunter Inspector (of the Poor). Legibility largely good though some text a little blotchy. Enquire further if wished. I have two sets of photocopies of this letter book for sale. May offer significant insight into Girthon families - please email for specific information. Heavy - will require extra postage at cost. See scans. . Fine (as such)
