Hardcover. iv+72p + 6p manuscript notes + blank leaves. 15 plates : two of coloured coats of arms; many portraits; one residence; one sepia portrait tipped in of Josephine Rainier. This publication is a transcript of a manuscript completed in 1845 by Calvert in London with an additional section on the Rainier family in South Africa.This is the first (and only) printed edition by J.H.Rainier. Manuscript notes on front pastedown: Felicia Mayhew with love and remembrances of a short and .visit to South Africa from George D. and Josephine Rainier (see page 65). 15 Rhodes Street. East London, South Africa 6th February 1924. Numerous handwritten notes in the text relating to the South African branch and 6p nealy written notes at the end of the printed material - two relating to family members who served in WWI - one with the Royal Flying Corps who was shot down over Germany and captured. Book complete in faded decorative green gilt binding which is rubbed and hads some corner/edge wear. Loose armorial bookplate of Rainier-Mayhew. First few pages are loose and have been taped in the past (now removed ) leaving residue (fairly neat) . Edges of loose frontis dog-eared. Some tissue guards creased. Still just good and well worth a rebind by a Rainier! Rare.See scans. . Fair/Good
