Description: The Carnegie United Kingdom Trust, 1917. Hardcover. xxviii+631p; illustrated. Large folding coloured map. An important work giving much insight into the state of health and the health services in Scotland in the early 1900's. A compilation from various authors, it attempts a survey of the lives of mothers and children throughout Scotland - with a very perceptive and detailed article on the Lochaber area based on Fort William and special stiudies on the Outer Hebrides, East Coast fishing villages, Shetland Isles, Skye, Loch broom, Vale of Leven, Alloa, Alva , Tillicoultry and Dollar, the Caithness tinkers, mining districts and the cities - Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee and Aberdeen. Sections on maternity benefit, poor law, unmarried morthers, the unmarried mothers child, the employment of expectant and nursing mothers, protection of infant life, deaths of pre-school children. With much anecdote. Has all the best virtues of a blue book but with more sparkle! Perceptive photographs from a humble village school to tangle for the cows and a black house abandoned on account of death from Tuberculosis. A major public health document. Ex Bermondsey then Brunel University library with robust binding and withdrawn stamp. Little toned but generally VG though library marks. See scans. . Very Good (as such)
