Description: Ottawa, Canada. Privately published in 1956. Octavo (9 x 6). 24 pp. plus a large folding map (31 x 15 inches) showing the campsites pitched during the canoe trip. Black and white photos throughout the book. Text map. The day-by-day diary account describes a 407 mile canoe trip, over twenty days, beginning on July 21 and concluding on August 12, which originated at Norway House on the Nelson River, then to the Hayes River at the head of Lake Winnipeg, and concludes on the Hayes, south of Hudson’s Bay, in Northeastern Manitoba. There were four men on the trip : The author, J. Frank Delaute, Secretary to Canada’s Governor General; Anthony Lovink, Netherlands Ambassador to Canada; Eric W. Morse, National Director of Canadian Clubs; and Tyler Thompson, United States Minister to Canada. The trip retraced a route originally taken by the Hudson Bay Company. There was periodical fishing and the catching of mostly pike, pickerel, and the uncommon trout. The diary records some difficult portages, and sometimes difficult paddling in strong winds and swift currents. There is a "Food List (four men - three weeks)" included at the back of the book. The book was reprinted by courtesy of the Canadian Bank Note Company, Limited. This is a rare book. Two examples are found in Worldcat. The book is bound in cream colored wrappers with black titles on the front cover. In fine condition.
