Two pages of the original manuscript - one hand-written, the other typed, laid in a pocket inside the back cover. Forewords by Keith Fulsher and Bill Taylor. Color photography by Michael Radencich. Colored paintings and pencil sketches by John Swan. A large number of color photos - many full-page - showing a vast number of Atlantic salmon flies, tied by the world's most accomplished fly dressers. Color photos. Text drawings. The book is bound in full crushed dark blue morocco with gilt titles on the spine and decorated front cover and with raised bands with gilt rules on the spine. Gilt fillets on the borders surrounding the handmade marbled end sheets. Along with the book there is a separate dark blue morocco and blue cloth folder with two facing John Swan colored angling prints, mounted, and each signed twice and lettered to match the book's letter. The book and morocco folder are kept in an elaborate American walnut case with beveled edges and brass hinges and clasp. On the front of the walnut case there is a hand painted Atlantic salmon fly, the "Colonel Bates" pattern. Inside the front cover of the walnut box, beautifully mounted and framed, is a size 5/0 "Colonel Bates" featherwing Atlantic salmon fly originated and dressed by Jimmy Younger of Dumfries, Scotland. This was Colonel Bates' last book. I'll refrain from adding a list of superlatives and just say there's nothing like it - it's very nice. The book, folder, and walnut case all in fine condition.
