The work is donated to Cavalier Alessandro Dorna, Chairman of the Académie des Sciences and Director of the Royal Observatory of Turin. "This monumental work is the result of a vast amount of astronomical calculations: in the nineteenth century, the question of the motion of the Moon continued to play a significant interest, not only as a special case of the movement of the three bodies, but also for eminently practical reasons, first of which the calculation of longitudes at sea."
