"Sirmond's work, which passed through later editions, is an example of seventeeth-century scholarship at its best, and the notes are excellent." (Delphi complete works of Sidonius Apollinaris, online bibliography). Jacques Sirmond (Riom 1559 - Paris 1651) was one of the most learned Jesuits of his time. This edition of Sidonius' letters and poems was later incorporated in Sirmond's Oeuvres. (Sommervogel VII.1237).
