Pictorial hand-colored lithographed title and thirty-three numbered hand-colored lithographed plates containing fifty-three illustrations. Plates 1, 2, 5, 6, 8, 9, 13, 15, 17, 18, 19, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 31, 32, and 33 each contain two images. The title-page has "1st vol." on lower left corner. Publisher's green pebbled cloth over boards, front cover decoratively stamped and lettered in gilt. Some light mainly marginal foxing otherwise a near fine copy. Exceptionally scarce - apparently no complete copies recorded. OCLC appears to refer to volume two only and Gumuchian possibly has an imperfect copy of the first volume. The plates: Cendrillon (plates 1-7) Le Chat botté (plates 8-15) La Belle au bois dormant (plates 16-29) Les Fées (plates 30-33) Edmond Morin (1824-1882) French painter, illustrator and engraver. From 1851 to 1856 he worked in London as an illustrator for The Illustrated London News and there he befriended the engravers William James Linton and Henry Duff. He returned to Paris with Henry Duff and worked for La Vie Parisienne and Le World of which he became one of the main illustrators with his accomplices Albert Duvivier and Charles-Théodore Sauvageot, as well as for other periodicals including La Semaine des enfants. Charles Perrault (1628-1703) was an iconic French author and member of the Académie Française. He laid the foundations for a new literary genre, the fairy tale, with his works derived from earlier folk tales, published in his 1697 book Histoires ou contes du temps passé (Stories or Tales from Past Times). The best known of his tales include Le Petit Chaperon Rouge (Little Red Riding Hood), Cendrillon ("Cinderella"), Le Maître chat ou le Chat botté (Puss in Boots), La Belle au bois dormant (Sleeping Beauty), and Barbe Bleue ("Bluebeard"). Gumuchian 1838 refers to an imperfect copy with just 47 illustrations on thirty leaves including the title. "Les feuilles de garde d'enfants sont portées disparues. Titre légèrement déchiré. une légère saleté" - "The childcare sheets are missing. Slightly torn title. some slight dirt." Gumuchian 4443 refers to the second volume only with twenty leaves containing four more tales: Riquet à la houpe; Le Petit poucet; Le chaperon rouge; & Barbe blue. .
