Small octavo (9 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches; 240 x 165 mm.). A group of eight exceptionally fine hand-colored etched plates, all window-mounted (3 1/8 x 5 3/8 inches; 80 x 135 mm.). (5 3/4 x 8 inches; 145 x 203 mm. with mounts). Together with: Small octavo (9 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches; 240 x 165 mm.). A group of six exceptionally fine hand-colored etched plates, all window-mounted (2 7/8 x 4 inches; 68 x 101 mm.). (5 1/2 x 7 inches; 140 x 180 mm. with mounts). Preserved in two green buckram chemises and matching quarter green and quarter brown morocco clamshell cases by the Lakeside Press, Chicago. Spines with two sporting tools and longitudinal title lettering between two raised bands. Each case with the engraved bookplate of Maxine and Joel Spitz. A fine group of fourteen highly unusual miniature scale sporting prints. The eight slightly larger plates show: A coaching scene; A Tandem scene; A horse fair; Fox hunters; A man out shooting, two prints showing baiting sports watched by top-hatted men who all look slightly disreputable. The first of these two prints has the letters "H A" on a box being carried by one of assistants. The final print shows oriental cavalry and has a very small (5/8 inch) clean marginal tear. The six slightly smaller but equally superb plates show various race horses. The title above is taken from the spines of the clamshell cases which read: ‘Miniature Sporting Prints by Henry Alken (circa 1827). Provenance: purchased from Spencer, London, 15 July 1937. Each print with the library stamp of Maxine and Joel Spitz on the verso of the mount. This fine selection from the rare series Sporting Medallions was published in 1828 by R. Ackermann. It consisted of a total of thirty plates: Steeplechasing (6); Fox Hunting (6); Coursing (6); Shooting (6), and Racing (6) (Siltzer). Siltzer, p. 61. .
